Millbrook Golf Resort
Co-host (with The Hills) of the New Zealand Open until 2020, Millbrook has distinctive, award-winning style and qualities – not least of which is the awesome sight of The Remarkables mountain range in the background.
Sir Bob Charles designed the first 18 holes of this championship course for its opening in 1993 – with Greg Turner renovating the course and extending it to 27 holes in 2010. Like many courses in New Zealand, it is a mix of parklands and links styles with tussocks, streams, schist stone, trees and buildings forming hazards for the golfer. Set among 200 hectares (500 acres) of natural landscapes and rolling hills, golfers also enjoy views of Lake Hayes.
Millbrook was voted the Leading Golf Resort in Australasia in 2010, 2011, and 2012 at the World Travel Awards as well as the Best Resort in New Zealand for 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014. The five-star resort is less than 30 minutes' drive from the centre of Queenstown, about 20 minutes from the international airport at Frankton, and only two minutes from the historic Arrowtown. The Hills is across the road from Millbrook Golf Course.
The Hills Golf Course
Co-host of the New Zealand Open, The Hills is one of New Zealand's foremost championship golf courses. Designed by John Darby, of Darby Partners, in association with landscape gardener Sebastian Mead and green keeper Ian Douglas, it is set over more than 200 hectares (500 acres) of a glacial valley.
Award-winning New Zealand architect Andrew Patterson designed the clubhouse to integrate with the landscape, and the building was among the nine best sports and leisure buildings in the world at World Architecture Awards 2008.
Aside from its natural beauty, a distinctive feature of this 18-hole course is its range of sculptures. The course founder and owner, New Zealand-born jewellery manufacturer and arts patron Sir Michael Hill, has created a contemporary sculpture park to exhibit New Zealand works such as 'Schist Strata' by Chris Booth and 'Kelp' by Mark Hill, 'Red Ridge' by Australian Kon Dimopoulos, and other international works such as 'The Wolves are Coming' by Chinese artist Liu Ruowang.
The Hills is across the road from Millbrook Golf Course (see previous entry), and therefore less than 30 minutes' drive from the centre of Queenstown, about 20 minutes from the international airport at Frankton, and a few minutes from historic Arrowtown. The course website incorporates a video flyover so golfers can get a feel for each hole before they set foot on a tee.
Jacks Point Golf Club
On the shores of Lake Wakatipu, the 18-hole championship course follows the natural terrain below The Remarkables mountain range, presenting the golfer with tussock grasslands, stone walls and rock outcrops, steep bluffs, and native bush.
John Darby, who also created The Hills, designed Jack's Point. The course was included in the Top 100 Golf Courses of the World list shortly after it opened in 2009. It has a dramatic setting in the Wakatipu basin, and Darby deliberately gave each hole a distinctive perspective and character while being sensitive to the natural landforms.
The clubhouse incorporates design elements, such as trusses made from Southland saleyard timber, that link it to the South Island's rich farming history.
