PRESS RELEASE - “Team Bula Va come from behind to take title”
In an extraordinary final round of the 2017 Sheraton Fiji Villa Teams Challenge at the Denarau G&RC, Team ‘Bula Va’ came from 24 points behind to take out the golf tournament team trophy. The team of Ken & Elaine Magill (Whangaparaoa GC) playing with Pearce & Marilyn Bresnehan (Waipu GC) are regular travellers to Fiji from New Zealand and have played in the tournament on eight occasions. The win this year on 858 points has been their best result.
The Sheraton Fiji Villa Teams Golf Challenge combines the points of all four team members over four rounds, in a modified ‘stableford’ scoring system that adjusts handicaps after each round.
‘Bula Va’s’ opening round of 221 points put them in second place of the 25 teams competing. After their second round of 209 points they dropped back to fourth position. Their third round of only 192 points saw the team slip back further to a tie for eighth place as the rest of the field made a charge during Round 3 which is well known as ‘moving day’.
It was however their fourth and final round of 236 points which saw them catapult the field to take line honours. The final day score was the best team score over the full week of competition.
Runners-up on 856 points were first timers to the Villa Challenge, Team ‘Wakatipu Wanderers’ from Central Otago (New Zealand). The team was made up of well known golfers from that region, John Dagg (Millbrook GC), Masters representative Gillian Dagg (Arrowtown GC), Les Nelson (Millbrook GC) and Judy Nelson (Arrowtown GC) could consider themselves unlucky not to win having led the tournament after 3 rounds with daily scores of 223, 216 and 205 points. Even a commendable 212 points during the final round was not enough to hold off the charging ‘Bula Va’ to miss out narrowly by 2 points.
There was a tie for 3rd place with Team ‘Bob’s Mob’ and Team ‘I C Red’ finishing strongly with totals of 850 points, 8 behind the winners. Regulars, ‘Bob’s Mob’ was made up of Bob Nelligan (North Shore GC), Keith Cullum (Waitemata GC), John Dunn (North Shore GC) and David Ambler (North Shore GC). Their best rounds of 218 points were produced in the opening two days. Team ‘I C Red’ was made up of new comers and a family combination – Glenn & Sally Goodall (The Hills GC), Brett Goodall (RNZAF GC) and Dave Hooper (Paraparaumu GC). Team ‘I C Red’ scored consistently each day and their final round of 226 points, second best score of the day helped them move to third place.
The winners were announced at a ’Christmas’ themed final awards ceremony held at the Westin Hotel on Denarau last night.
There were 100 players from New Zealand, Australia and Fiji entered in the Villa Teams Challenge, representing 35 clubs. The best-placed Fiji team was ‘The Locals’ made of Gary Felton, Linda Callaghan, Tiri Naylor and Joy Leslie, all Denarau Members. Their score of 830 points put them in 13th place. The best placed Australian team came in 6th on 837 points. The Team from Sydney ‘Who Cares’ was made up of Brian & Margaret Naylor (Cromer GC), Colin & Suzanne McLean (Manly GC)
