Brown & Lang win the 2015 Denarau Womens Golf Classic

Two Kiwis have won the 13th Sheraton Fiji Denarau Women’s Golf Classic, Diane Brown (Kaiapoi GC) partnered with Suzie Lang (Turangi GC) by one shot.
In the tournaments 13-year history there has never been repeat winners, despite many pairs entering multiple times, year after year.
A field of 54 pairs competed in the three-day event that scored pairs in three different formats, with the totals cumulating daily. All three tournament rounds and an opening fun Ambrose tournament are hosted at the Sheraton owned, Denarau Golf & Racquet Club’s golf course.
Brown and Lang, who had never meet each other prior to the tournament, amassed 161 points after their opening round of 48 points, which gave them their head start.
Tied in 1st equal position after the opening round scored in a 4BBB Stableford format, they then added a further 44 points from their second round of Foursomes Stableford.
Brown and Lang, then added 69 points after todays combined stableford rounds pipping 2nd place getters, Jill Harding and Shirley Humphrey – both members of Feilding Golf Club in New Zealand.
In 3rd place, 4 shots back finishing on 156 points were the Mt Maunganui GC (NZ) pair of Suellen Baty and Kath Gorringe.
The best local finish was Dawn Mackenzie (DG&RC) paired with Debbie Lovett (Gleniti, NZ) in 6th position on 146 points.
Mackenzie and Lovett trailed 4th equal place getters Kim Edwards and Liz Reedy (Riverside GC, NZ) on 148 points, along with Jennifer Sowman (The Grange) paired with Raewyn Cording (Riverside GC, NZ).
Other locals included Joy Leslie (DG&RC) and Tiri Naylor (DG&RC) who finished in a share for 18th place, and Sereima Bale and Edwina Petersen, also DG&RC members, in a share for 24th place. Bale was however accurate with her par 3-hole play, winning closest to the pin on three days.
The tournaments most regular player Dale Malaghan from Royal Auckland (NZ) partnered with DG&RC member Sulu Brooks finished well back in 38th place. Malaghan has been a competitor in all thirteen Denarau Women’s Golf Classics.
The tournament is owned and managed by Auckland based PaR nz Golfing Holidays, in partnership with the Sheraton Fiji Hotels and Resorts. Dates for the 2016 Sheraton Denarau Women’s Golf Classic will be announced shortly.
Tournament Directors, Denise Langdon and Kim Buckley will be staying on at Denarau, managing next weeks 2015 Sheraton Fiji Villa Challenge Teams event due to commence on Monday 10 August. Local hopes will be pinned on DG&RC members, Tracey Duncan, Trevor Fox, Paula Greenville, Tiri Naylor, Joy Leslie, Alfred Bowman, Mohammed Faiyaz and Gary Felton. The tournament is a 4-day event scored on a modified stableford points system, with handicaps changing daily.
