Press Release 2017 Hawkes Bay 4-Course Golf & Wine Classic
The 2nd annual Hawkes Bay 4-Course Golf & Wine Classic attracted double the numbers in year two with 180 golfers from over 70 golf clubs playing the tournament week. The focus of the event is to attract golfers from Australia and around New Zealand to the sunny Hawkes Bay and showcase not only the golf courses but all the region has to offer, which is plenty!
Across 6 divisions we had mens and women winners from Masterton, Maraenui, Nopera, Mt Maunganui, Boulcotts Farm, Otaki and Thames.
Competitors played 4 courses over 5 days including Maraenui, Napier, Hawkes Bay and Hastings golf clubs. Newly introduced in 2017 was a ‘rest day’ to allow golfers the opportunity to play tourist with options for cycle tours wine tours and to play the world ranked Cape Kidnappers.
The men’s and women’s field was split into 5 competition divisions by handicap with a concurrent stroke play competition for lower handicap players. The main competition being stableford, with daily prizes sponsored by naming sponsor Trinity Hill, awarded, recognising the top scores at each course.
Linda Watkins (Otaki) won the women’s 1st division with 163 points, an 11-point margin over Joy Han (Titirangi) in second place. Joanne Wilton-Eadie (Levin) was awarded 3rd place, a further 5 shots behind on 147 points.
Barbara Ashworth (Thames) led all week in the women’s 2nd division, finishing on 153 points, a 2-shot lead over the field. Marilyn Ainslie (Mangakino) was placed 2nd, on 151 points, and in 3rd, Diane Eccles (Mercury Bay) one shot back on 150 points.
Nopera GC member, Phil Radford took line honours in the men’s 1st division with a final score of 146 stableford points. Phil not only celebrated his win but a remarkable feat of playing his 250th different golf course in New Zealand. In runner-up position was Richard ‘the Judge’ Watson a local from Hastings GC on 144 points with Ian Howells (South Head) one shot back, on 143 points, taking 3rd place.
Ross Newnham (Mt Maunganui) with 145 points, won the men’s 2nd division, 2 shots ahead of Paul Peckston (Windross Farm) on 143 points. Waiheke member Paul Mayhew came 3rd, on 143 points.
Morris Black (Boulcotts Farm) had a solid week leading in all four rounds, and finishing on 158 to be awarded the top place in the men’s 3rd division, a massive 12 points ahead of the field. Will Allan (Omarama) in 2nd, with Brian Keuke (Purangi) in 3rd on 144 points.
Kathy Olsen (Maraenui), an accomplished Hawkes Bay Masters representative won the Women’s Stroke Award with rounds of 81, 82, 83, 79 for a final score of 325. Winning the mens Gross division was John Warner (Masterton) scoring 76, 77, 77, 78 for a total of 308. John played consistently all week and was in fact highly placed in the stableford competition as well.
The tournament was managed and promoted by PaR nz Golfing Holidays, New Zealand’s largest golf tour and tournament operator, supported by the four clubs and in conjunction with Napier City Council, the Art Deco Society, and Hawkes Bay Tourism.
International brands, TaylorMade, Bosch, Neff and Gaggenau were the main tournament sponsors along with one of Hawkes Bay’s leading wineries, Trinity Hill.
In addition to the four rounds, players and partners enjoyed local cuisine at each of the courses, with wine matching from Trinity Hill.
PaR nz Golfing Holidays are expecting that the tournament will continue to grow in numbers and have already received forward registrations from Australian golfers.
