When We Can, We Will Play… Pebble Beach!

The Pebble Beach Resort Experience

Don’t only dream about it – put Pebble Beach on your Bucket List of must plays!  It is the ultimate experience to be savoured!  From its 3 courses - Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill and The Links at Spanish Bay to the many restaurants and bars, with two great accommodation options, The Lodge at Pebble Beach and The Inn at Spanish Bay.  This video says it all – click here.

Rivalling The Old Course at St Andrews and Augusta for acclaim and adoration, some rate Pebble Beach as the best course in the world.  The views over three coves to the Pacific Ocean give this iconic course some of the best backdrops in golf and its images have appeared in many golf publications over the ages.

Its bunkers are renowned as fearsome and the greens small in comparison to other championship courses.  Simply, a heck of a golf challenge and a dream to play.  The original layout was opened in 1919 but has since had four subsequent renovations including enhancements by the Golden Bear, Jack Nicklaus in 1998, and the late Arnie Palmer, in conjunction with Thad Layton in 2007 and 2016.

While dreaming of Pebble Beach – also consider the Robert Trent Jones Snr challenge of Spyglass Hill which dates back to 1966.  Inspired by Pine Valley and Augusta National, RTJ Snr designed a parkland style course that has a ‘linksy’ opening but which then changes to tree lined parkland with an inland turn.  Elevation changes are synonymous with Spyglass.

Robert Trent Jones Jnr laid out The Links at Spanish Bay which opened in 1987.  In fact it was a three-way consortium with Trent Jones Jnr working with Tom Watson and Sandy Tatum.  Inspiration for this course was the links challenges of Scotland and Ireland which often has rolling mists from the Pacific, even in summer!  You can even hear the lone piper at dusk each night!

Some interesting facts – did you know Pebble Beach is owned by movie legend Clint Eastwood, the Arnold Palmer family and a group of local investors.  Pebble Beach has hosted the U.S. Open six times: 1972, 1982, 1992, 2000, 2010, and 2019 and is scheduled a seventh time in 2027.
